'How we live in God's household' Introduction to 1 Timothy. Full introduction booklet out next week. [writing a letter] Who? Paul Timothy one of three 'pastoral' letters - what is helpful and unhelpful about this category. [Children's worksheet] Where? Ephesus [what do you remember from the book of Acts]. False teaching. When? AD 62-66 Why? He tells us: clear purpose in 3.14-15; how you ought to behave in the household of God. Two wrong poles; overly formal, forgetting we are in God's household and intimacy, in Christ. Overly casual and flippant, forgetting it is the living God's household. Neither merely formal, nor merely flippant. Backdrop of false teaching threatening the church. v3 kicks off with confronting false doctrine - it really matters, because without it nothing else will thrive ultimately. Possibly a proto-gnostic heresy; cf chapter 4.1-5, and what he says about women, and about Hymenaeus and Alexander, etc. 6.3-4 healthy doctrine v unhealthy craving. Everything connects; when you have false teaching you always get unhealthy or disordered communities. Why 'healthy' is better than 'sound', since it includes dynamic healthy response rather than abstracted static equilibrium. v4-7 centredness matters! It matters so much. How? Although Paul's letters are all similar in how they start, the key differences are always important. Here, God our Saviour and Jesus our hope. God our Saviour/Jesus our hope. The two poles of past and future, between which our present is suspended. [Rear view and front view windscreens] Full read through What do you notice. Surprising, offensive, confusing? We will get to it. We begin just by reading and listening. Notice the themes and purpose of the letter: church leadership; proper worship; qualifications for elders and deacons; advice on confronting false teaching; how to treat various types of individual; live a life beyond reproach, giving others a standard to emulate. Theme of the gospel of mercy . And because it's so precious, it must be defended and stewarded [eg transferring a heart transplant or crucial medicines - you have to guard the journey]. Therefore it is 'good warfare'. Theme of stewardship , and associated ideas (managing, training, etc). Faithfulness with a stewardship. ['economy' word root and illustration]. Therefore the idea of 'household'. In summary: Gospel/mercy - God our Saviour and Jesus our hope therefore...Healthy doctrine/false doctrine therefore...Steward faithfully (which includes guarding (eg 6.20), fighting, therefore - eg 1.18, 6.12. Charged 'in the presence of God' (5.21, 6.13-14) therefore...Household - each with different duties and spheres in different directions [need to relearn the idea of household - more like a small community]
