Preach the Word 4 1 h I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, i who is to judge the living and the dead, and by j his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; k reprove, rebuke, and l exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 m For the time is coming when people will not endure n sound 1 teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and o will turn away from listening to the truth and p wander off into myths. 5 As for you, q always be sober-minded, r endure suffering, do the work of s an evangelist, t fulfill your ministry. 6 For u I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my v departure has come. 7 w I have fought the good fight, x I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is y laid up for me z the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, a the righteous judge, will award to me on b that Day, and not only to me but also to all c who have loved his appearing.

Preach the Word! Intro : What are things we do in season and out of season? Why? 1. Paul charges Timothy to preach the word in and out of season (v1-2) Pay attention to the immensely weighty charge (v1) He's charged to do a particular kind of 'word ministry'. More than formal, actually functional: the word differently and appropriately applied to people (reprove, rebuke, exhort), and with true gospel manner (complete patience and teaching). 'Be ready'; constantly alert, at the door, standing by. In and out season applies on many different levels. Personal, local, social, etc. How does this apply to us if we are not pastors or preachers? a) The value and support we give to word ministry; b) praying for preaching; c) the place of 'informal' word ministry we all do. 2. Unlike those who turn away, Timothy is to keep going in this (v3-5) The time is coming - in Timothy's own experience. Perhaps Paul can see where things are headed in Ephesus. There is this ebb and flow in the last days of constant waves of turning away. 'Heaping up' teachers to suit their passions (motivating drivers). As if the sheer numbers of teachers promoting a given fad proves its correctness. Consensus doesn't make us safer, it just makes us feel safer. v4 They feel entitled to move 'beyond' the Scriptures into new territory, but it's just myths. Not just untrue, but also ultimately the same old myths which have been manifested in previous forms. v5 But Timothy, who has already been told to 'continue'. Is to be sober-minded/vigilant; 'keep your head'. Endure. Work of evangelist; ie perform the role of someone announcing good news (this is not implying a formal 'full-time evangelist' type role). Fulfil your ministry; fill it up. Be fully convinced. However small or large, discharge the service. It is a kind of summary; through being sober-minded, enduring suffering, and announcing the Kingdom constantly, he will fulfil his ministry. 'What are my ears itching to hear?' NB quite possibly something very good, theological, a strongly held conviction - these are the areas we're actually most vulnerable. Also NB in the Scriptures, people are led astray by words (eg the adulteress in Proverbs does not dress provocatively, she speaks). God's glory . His word is the truth. That truth is Jesus, ultimate reality. FCF . Itching ears, heaping up teachers. H1. World's gurus. H2. Fads and fashionable followings. Desire to be on the side of consensus. Person of Jesus . He came to preach. He exemplified in season and out. He is the sober-minded lead evangelist. He is the truth, no mere myth. He shows complete patience. Work of Jesus . He was rejected because of the itching ears of the people, more eager to hear their own system than the truth. He endured suffering, for our sake. He fulfilled his ministry, fully convinced, going to the cross. He is ultimately the lone voice of truth in the darkness, while the others all heap up lies. Union with Jesus. We have died to myths and are alive to the truth in Jesus. Invitation . Be sober-minded. Fully convinced. Confrontation . Turn from myths and itching ears. Consolation . Endure suffering. Keep going in the word, in season and out. Wrap up : 'Preach - pray - love - stay'
