Genesis 10:1-32

Nations Descended from Noah 10 1 These are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood. 2 k The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan: Elishah, l Tarshish, m Kittim, and Dodanim. 5 From these n the coastland peoples spread in their lands, each with his own language, by their clans, in their nations. 6 o The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan. 7 The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan. 8 Cush fathered Nimrod; he was the first on earth to be a mighty man. 1 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord . Therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord .” 10 The beginning of his kingdom was p Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in q the land of Shinar. 11 From that land he went into Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, and 12 Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. 13 r Egypt fathered Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, 14 Pathrusim, Casluhim (from whom 1 the Philistines came), and s Caphtorim. 15 t Canaan fathered Sidon his firstborn and Heth, 16 and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, 17 the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, 18 the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the clans of the Canaanites dispersed. 19 And the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon in the direction of Gerar as far as Gaza, and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations. 21 To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, children were born. 22 The u sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24 Arpachshad fathered v Shelah; and Shelah fathered Eber. 25 w To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, 1 for in his days the earth was divided, and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 x Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. 30 The territory in which they lived extended from Mesha in the direction of Sephar to the hill country of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations. 32 These are the clans of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, in their nations, y and from these the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood.

Genesis 10.1-32
The earth was re-populated after the flood Introduction This is a summary written later, after Babel This is like the flood; you really can take this seriously. Or like Babel. It expects to be taken seriously. cf standard 'history' narrative is extremely blind. This really does connect with a huge amount of ancient historical sources (Herodotus, Josephus etc) Number 70 is significant - cf later Israel, seventy elders, and the reference in the song of Moses. What God does in and through Israel is actually a microcosm of his dealings with all of humanity. A 'worked example'. The interjected comments are significant 1. Shem, Ham and Japheth's descendants spread out across the earth in groups Land, language, clan, nation - v5, 20, 31 See table/diagram summaries for each of the three lines Challenges modern idea of 'nation' (and expose logical shakiness of the modern idea - pegged to which historical time?). E.g., what is 'Britain' - does it include France; America? At what point in time does the definitive 'Britain' exist. Connection to last week; the attention to 'Hamitic' peoples, especially Canaan's descendants, sets up basically the rest of the OT. Nimrod as an eg; the grabbing of tyrannical power the precursor to the empires which would be descended from him (Babylon, Nineveh), and which hailed him as a god/semi-god. Genesis firmly humanises him. Peleg, in his days the earth was divided - ie Babel 2. God's blessing is for all the peoples of all the earth lands, language, clan (cf Abraham - in you all the 'clans', same word, of the earth will be blessed), nations - v5, 20, 31 Already implicit, through Shem ...through Abraham...through his seed...who poured out his Spirit at Pentecost onto all nations It may even be that Luke had the table of nations in mind as he compiled Acts. Glory of God. He blesses and multiplies his image bearers so that they do indeed fill the earth, despite their rebellion. His blessing implicit to all families of the earth. FCF. Pursuing significance and glory outside of and apart from God. Kingdoms and might. The Babel rebellion. Irreligious ways - basically like Nimrod. Religious ways - thinking that the blessing of God is only for some kinds of people. Person of Jesus. The true son of Shem. The one who brings the blessing to all nations. The true seed of Abraham. The true Son and image. He himself is the true human, the true temple of God. Work of Jesus. Bears the curse for the nations' rebellion and pride. In the sight of the nations. Pours out the Spirit on people of all nations. In his death he cleanses people of all nations to be temples of God, and then fills them with God's own presence. Union with Jesus. We are each located somewhere in time and place and people. Yet located in him as a new creation. I love ethnic diversity and embrace it in the church community. No longer chasing at power and significance as I have been given it in Jesus, the true man. Wrap-up The peoples have been scattered. The peoples have been blessed together in one new man, Jesus Christ. The peoples have been gathered already now in Jesus' own body and taken to God. Gathered around the throne are all nations and languages.
