When God created man, o he made him in the likeness of God. 2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man 1 when they were created. 3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and p named him Seth. 4 q The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 5 Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, r and he died. 6 When Seth had lived 105 years, s he fathered Enosh. 7 Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died. 9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan. 10 Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died. 12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died. 15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared. 16 Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died. 18 When Jared had lived 162 years he fathered t Enoch. 19 Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died. 21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. 22 Enoch u walked with God 1 after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch u walked with God, and he was not, 1 v for God took him. 25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech. 26 Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died. 28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son 29 and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground w that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief 1 from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.” 30 Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died. 32 After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered x Shem, Ham, and y Japheth.

Sermon outline
In the midst of the human story of death, God wrote a story of hope Introduction What are we supposed to 'do' with genealogies? Obsess and get distracted by the details? If we only have a 'systematic' theology lens, we ignore passages like these. With a 'biblical' theology lens, we see their significance. Genealogies deliberately tie the Bible together, like seams. Genesis (start of OT) and Chronicles (end of OT in the original order). And then Matthew (start of NT). Here, deliberately tying the creation account (v1-2) to Noah and the flood. All inseparable. 1. Humanity is blessed and multiplies, but continues to die Links back to the created order. Humanity in God's image, blessed to multiply. This is a 'linear' genealogy, rather than one listing all the sons/daughters. We follow 10 men, along a 'righteous' line through Seth. This is the story of God preserving a faithful people for himself, amidst the terror and suffering (compare the two Lamechs, here and cf Genesis 4), who trust in his word and hope in him. Number 7 often prominent in a list of 10 - Enoch. We can't miss the repeated line: 'and he died'. Despite the hopes, the activity, this is what happens. Really old ages - how to understand? Main principle; all kinds of things were different before the flood. NB also were 'old' men before they had children. 2. A son of Adam will eventually bring rest from out of the curse Enoch a 'type' of Christ (Hebrews 11). The person of Jesus of Nazareth - blameless in his generation. Walked with God. Noah a 'type' of Christ. The hope of relief/comfort/rest from out of the curse. The work of Jesus. He goes to death, suffers the curse, in order that through his loss he might give rest and comfort. Through exhausting the curse as a son of Adam (son of man) he would remove it forever. So what? We like 'systematic' theology lenses because they give us commands to do. We dislike 'biblical' theology lenses because they leave us with the invitation simply to adore Jesus. So there are two humanities: humanity 'in Adam' or 'in Christ'. One controlled by a desire to escape futility through grand plans and hopes, only to be ultimately disappointed, no matter how high you fly. Or in Christ, to realise that he who tries to save his life will lose it, but he who loses it in Christ will save it. Those in Christ are passing out of this broken age and into the new creation to come (just as Noah at the flood). What a privilege to live when we do (cf 1 Peter 1.10-12), to adore God for this privilege of an unfolded and completed plan. Wrap-up Humanity is blessed and multiplies, but dies. But a son of Adam has brought eternal relief from the curse. Matthew 13.16-17 But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. 17 For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. Matthew 13:16-17 ESV
