The Words of Eternal Life 60 t When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, v knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see w the Son of Man x ascending to y where he was before? 63 z It is the Spirit who gives life; a the flesh is no help at all. b The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But c there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus v knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and d who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you e that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” 66 f After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to g the Twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have h the words of eternal life, 69 and i we have believed, and have come to know, that j you are k the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, l “Did I not choose you, g the Twelve? And yet one of you is m a devil.” 71 He spoke of Judas n the son of Simon Iscariot, for o he, one of the Twelve, was going to betray him.

Notes
You have the words of eternal life Intro Trajectory in chapter 6, from calling him Rabbi, to talking about him and grumbling. And now to say his teaching is 'hard' and to turn away (v60,66). The offence of the cross - it separates true and false disciples. All that Jesus has been saying in this chapter proves true; the crowds cannot receive him and the life he gives. But the eleven disciples receive him as the Holy One of God, who speaks the words of eternal life. 1. Grumbling unbelief proves Jesus' words (v60-66) v60 hard as in violent, harsh, stern. The offence of 'eat my flesh'. v61-62 skandalizo. Son of Man ascending. Recap all the Son of Man bits by now. v62 what if you were to behold the son of man...ascending. I.e., being lifted up on the cross, which was his route to the glory he had before. v61-63 answers the Q. It's my words that count! Son of Man: revelation from heaven. T he Spirit is the life-giving-one v64-66 unbelief, v65 this proves what Jesus has been saying. 2. Jesus' people come to him and believe that he has come from God (v67-71) 6.66 many turn away from him at realising what true discipleship is; utter dependence not on remarkable signs but upon Jesus himself. And being offended and disgusted, 'scandalised' at the thought of feeding on his body and blood. And this is before the cross is fully in view (v62). The cross separates true and false disciples. v67-70 the initial proof of 6.37ff etc. v67 the Q which the pandemic has asked us. 'W e have believed, perfect/stative'. v70 his response to their faith is, I chose you. v70-71 Not that Jesus' calling has failed. He knew from the start that Judas is a 'devil' - ie doing his work. God's glory . He gives eternal life, through his life-giving-Spirit, by his word. FCF . Unbelief masquerading as belief - Judas the archetype. Following with Jesus because you want something from him or benefit in some way (personal gain). Or being 'scandalised' by Jesus' insistence that following him means 'feeding' on his death, and so 'turning away'. Person of Jesus . He himself chooses you to be his disciple, and calls you to live in his death. He himself has the words of eternal life. He is the Holy One of God. Work of Jesus . He came in order to be betrayed, and suffer and die, and so give his flesh for the world. He 'ascended' to the glory he had before by means of the cross (John 12.32-33). Union with Jesus . Come and follow him. Invitation . Hear and believe the words of eternal life. Confrontation . Stop being scandalised by his call. Consolation . If you are following Jesus, be assured you have been granted eternal life by the Father and chosen by the Lord Jesus. Wrap up : All that Jesus has been saying in this chapter proves true; the crowds cannot receive him and the life he gives. But the eleven disciples receive him as the Holy One of God, who speaks the words of eternal life.
