The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation 27 Of David. 1 The Lord is my h light and my i salvation; j whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold 1 of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers assail me to k eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. 3 l Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet 1 I will be confident. 4 m One thing have I asked of the Lord , that will I seek after: that I may n dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon o the beauty of the Lord and to inquire 1 in his temple. 5 For he will p hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will q lift me high upon a rock. 6 And now my r head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of s joy; t I will sing and make melody to the Lord . 7 u Hear, O Lord , when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me! 8 You have said, v “Seek 1 my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord , do I seek.” 2 9 w Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, x O God of my salvation! 10 For y my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will z take me in. 11 a Teach me your way, O Lord , and lead me on b a level path because of my enemies. 12 c Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for d false witnesses have risen against me, and they e breathe out violence. 13 I believe 1 that I shall look upon f the goodness of the Lord in g the land of the living! 14 h Wait for the Lord ; i be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord !

Sermon outline
The LORD is my light and my salvation Intro : Connections to Ps26 and 28; the temple, dwelling of God etc David's love for God in the midst and presence of hostility. It shows and illustrates the 'integrity' / purity of heart of Ps 26 . 1. In the midst of terrible fear, David is confident in the LORD (v1-3) His light, salvation, mountain stronghold v3 how to metabolise and 'rehearse' our fears 2. David's longing is for the LORD himself (v4-6) Seek after, beauty of the LORD One thing. Devotion. Beauty of the Lord. 'Seeking' is a theme in this Psalm. He knows in the day of trouble the LORD will be tender to him He knows he will sing and shout with joy He will hide and cover me. Ultimately this is at the cross, where Jesus covers his people and takes our death. v6 the necessary emotions of true devotion; singing 3. David prays that the LORD will be near him in trouble (v7-12) He's praying for what he knows is already promised 4. Wait for the LORD! (v13-14) Future hope drives courage today; v13 I believe. Intensive; surely I believe. The goodness of the Lord - when, where? Waiting, being 'strong' and 'taking courage' - how they relate Be strong. Courage. Theme. cf 1 Corinthians 16 act like men, be strong etc. Jesus going to the cross, the faith of Psalm 27.13-14; cf Hebrews 5.7 Glory of God . His beauty and goodness and tenderness to his fearful people. FCF . Fear and dread, stemming from our self-reliance, our fragile egos, our eyes off god, our idols. It's knock on effects. Anger, blame, scarcity, Idols! Person of Jesus . The goodness of the Lord in human flesh. The temple of the Lord among us. Work of Jesus . Covering and hiding us in the day of trouble. Giving us the land of the living. Union with Jesus . Learning how to wait for the Lord and be strong in the face of fear. To sing in the presence of brokenness. Becoming a Son who seeks the Father with all my heart, since that is what I am in Christ - a devoted Son. Wrap-up: What am I to do with my fears? Look all the closer at my mighty light, salvation, mountain stronghold: at Jesus crucified and risen, now inviting me to join him in his life as a Son, dwelling in joy before the Father.
