James 2:1-13
na28
nasb
a My brethren, b do not hold your faith in our c glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of d personal favoritism.
For if a man comes into your 1 assembly with a gold ring and dressed in 2 a fine clothes,
and there also comes in a poor man in b dirty clothes,
alternative
and you 1 pay special attention to the one who is wearing the a fine clothes, and say,
“You sit here in a good place,”
actionresult
and you say to the poor man,
“You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,”
series
progression
have you not made distinctions among yourselves,
καὶ ἐγένεσθε κριταὶ διαλογισμῶν πονηρῶν;
and become judges a with evil 1 motives?
conditional
ideaexplanation
Listen, a my beloved brethren:
did not b God choose the poor 1 of this world to be c rich in faith
καὶ κληρονόμους τῆς βασιλείας ἧς ἐπηγγείλατο τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν;
and d heirs of the kingdom which He e promised to those who love Him?
But you have dishonored the poor man.
concessive
Is it not the rich who oppress you
καὶ αὐτοὶ ἕλκουσιν ὑμᾶς εἰς κριτήρια;
and 1 personally a drag you into 2 court?
οὐκ αὐτοὶ βλασφημοῦσιν τὸ καλὸν ὄνομα τὸ ἐπικληθὲν ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς;
a Do they not blaspheme the fair name 1 by which you have been called?
If, however, you a are fulfilling the 1 royal law according to the Scripture,
“ b You shall love your neighbor as yourself ,”
actionmanner
you are doing well.
But if you a show partiality,
you are committing sin and are convicted by the 1 law as transgressors.
comparison
For whoever keeps the whole 1 law
δὲ ἐν ἑνί,
and yet a stumbles in one point,
he has become b guilty of all.
For He who said,
“ a Do not commit adultery ,”
also said,
“ b Do not commit murder .”
Now if you do not commit adultery,
but do commit murder,
negativepositive
you have become a transgressor of the 1 law.
ground
So speak and so act
as those who are to be judged by a the law of liberty.
For a judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy 1 triumphs over judgment.
