Hi Andy and Sarah, thank you for leading us through and for the encouragement along the way.
Sarah Hubert
Thank you!
Hey all, thank you for being a part of the Intro to Arcing continued group! We have finished going through the book of James, so are officially "done." However we will leave the group open so that you can revisit arcs as you wish, and newcomers may add their arcs to the mix.

Blessings!

A question about James 5:7-12
Hi friends, as you are working through our current passage, consider what the connection is between being patient for the coming of the Lord (vs 7-11) and not swearing (and oath) (vs 12). Happy Arcing!

Last Couple days for 5:1-6
Andy will put up his arc of James 5:1-6 in the next couple of days and we will move on to the next section, so hurry and get your arcs up! On a separate note, today at sundown begins the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the day of Atonement. Jews all over the world today will start a 1 day fast and prayer time at sundown, hoping that God will forgive their sins for the previous year and that their names will be written in God's book for the next year. Ignoring for the second the inaccuracies between the modern customs for the holiday and what is actually written in Scripture, praise God that He has sent the once-for-all sacrifice that pays for our sins and gives us eternal Atonement! If you have any Jewish friends, pray for them and seek opportunities to talk to them about God's eternal Atonement through His son!
Nohea
Thanks for the encouragement regarding Yom Kippur. I don't know of a religiously Jewish person here on Molokai. Though, I do know quite a lot of gentiles who need to hear this message of atonement. Maybe I will meet a Jew!

Any Questions?
Hi friends, we will give James 5:1-6 about another week. Does anyone have any questions about the passage as you are going through it?

Hello!
Greetings to everyone, I'm Sarah. As Andy mentioned I am taking over facilitating this group. Some of you I already am acquainted with, and I'm very happy to (virtually) meet the rest of you.
The next section we will be doing is 4:13-17. Andy will post his arc of the passage in two weeks (around Sept. 19th). A question for this passage: What is the connection between verses 13-16 and verse 17? Why and how is the main point of v13-16 a ground for 17?

On we go!
Next up is James 4:11-12. Only two verses now, and so everyone has time to invest in this. A particular challenge I would like to give everyone with this arc is to do a paraphrase in your MINE column that does not use the word “judge.” An important question for this passage is what James means by this word as he uses it throughout this text, and so doing a paraphrase will force us to wrestle with this issue.

I got lost
Hello everyone: I'm lost on some technical issues:
1. Since last Monday I'm trying to share my arc with a MacBook Pro but it seems I cannot do it. Did I miss something?
2. Today I managed to use a Windows Base Notebook and I was able to share the arc but I have no clue were it is. If I click on it, it says "waiting for approval". Someone can help?
Thank you and God Bless.
Kathleen S
Hello! I have a mac book pro as well. You have to open up another browser to publish it. I had to download firefox and it worked. As far as your second question... Once its been approved, you should see a spot that says you can share it with "intro to arcing". Hope this helps!
Giuseppe
Thank you. Still I don't know where I shared my arc but on the other hand I managed to download Firefox. Thanks for the hint.
Andy Hubert
Your shared arc is in [menu] > Published and shared > My shared pages. When you open it there, you will see check boxes on the right side where select the one associated with this group.

Thank you ... I managed to do it. A bit complicated though.

retorical quetions
Hey everyone! Im stuck on this arc (James 4:1-10) at v.5...this is a rhetorical question and Im having a hard time knowing how to arc it. I know we've met this before but for some reason this one is throwing me off more. Any insight would be much appreciated!!
Nohea
I'm struggling with it as well. Maybe try putting in your own words. Something along the lines of "There is a reason scripture says...". State the rhetorical question in a non-rhetorical way.

Just a thought.

That is helpful, thank you!

James 4:1-10
Sorry for falling off the map the last couple weeks. Serious family situation to deal with. But I am back!

Yes, as has been talked about, James 4:1-10 is the next section to hit up. Before we jump into it, however, can I ask who is willing to commit to putting an arc together for this passage? Of course life is busy for all and so I do not want anyone to feel bad if they have only been a spectator in this group so far, but perhaps making a commitment and putting it on the calendar will serve several of you.

So... if you are willing to commit to making an arc of James 4:1-10 at some point in the next 1-2 weeks, please come to the group page and respond to this message to make that commitment. (Your commitment will probably encourage others as well!)
Kathleen S
I plan to post one! I'm so sorry to hear about your family.

Good to have you back Andy. I'm in.

James 3:13-18

I am enjoying seeing what the "regulars" come up with, but I would love to see some people contribute to the group for the first time as well.

In terms of putting a close on the last passage (James 3:5-12), I want to encourage everyone who has not yet to take a look at Rob Elphick's page. I found his notes very insightful.

Into James 3
Let's take a look this week at James 3:1-5a (follow the ESV paragraph). This is a shorter, less scary passage, and so I hope to see many arcs posted.

(By the way, I would love to hear your comments on my effort with James 2:14-26. I just now posted the arc, and you can also find 3 learning resources videos on this text.)

Rhetorical Questions?
Hey guys, hoping for some help here. How do you think is the best way to link together a series of questions that are somewhat rhetorical like those at the beginning of this weeks passage?
Josué Pineda
Relate the main ideas, not of the rhetorical questions, but of the statements intended.
Christopher Klein
I thought this was a good question, and a good answer.  It would be good to hear what others think as well.  Sometimes I add the implied answer in the next, so that I can use the Question-Answer relationship.
Chris Thomas
Thanks Josué, much appreciated. I'll keep mulling this one over and see what I can come up with :)

Week 2
I enjoyed very much the arcs and notes that people submitted. Great job. Two quick points I want to encourage us in as we go into the second week:

(1) Several of you commented on others work. Great. The more we do that, the more this group will serve us to go deeper in James.

(2) Besides comments, I strongly encourage you to star the pages that you find most helpful. This will serve others who do not have time to look at everyone's work. It will also draw others outside the group into the most helpful arcs each week.

For week 2/3
Once again, we have a longer passage, but I think if we just take part of it we won't see as much as we could. So let's take two weeks this time and do an arc to the end of the chapter--James 2:14-26. No need to wait the two weeks to share yours--post it when you have it.

A new week
Sorry I didn't get to completing the text.  I was on vacation until Thursday.  Then I have only 15 minutes a day slotted for arcing.  I did what I could but never finished.  I look forward to spending 15 a day this week.  By the way, I started using the app.  But didn't get too far.  Are there instructions on how to use the app??

80 members in the group and only one arc shared so far. I encourage you all to make the most of this group by being active participants. Wrestle with the text and show us what you found!

I will share my arc with the group on Sunday.
Chris Thomas
Thanks for the spur on Andy. I've finished my feeble effort off tonight and am just waiting for it to be approved. I'm not sure I did the right thing or not as I 'shared' the project rather then 'published' it—hopefully I'll still be able to assign it to this group. Blessings.
Andy Hubert
Yes, you can certainly assign the page to the group by sharing it as well as publishing it. To do this, you will need to go to your page (menu > Published and share > My shared pages) and then check the checkbox next to this group's name.
Nohea
How to publish?? When I try to publish a page it says I need to include audio, but then says my device doesn't allow audio. Is there another way to do this?
Andy Hubert
I see you discovered how to share (as opposed to publish). That is your only option without the audio clip. I do not know your setup, but it may be that you just need to use a different browser in order to be able to do the audio. Chrome and Firefox presently are the two browsers with all functionality available for publishing pages.

Note: While you did share your arc, it does not look like you shared it with the group. If you go to your shared page, you will see a checkbox there that you check to share it.

James it is.
While a few other suggestions were made, I think it is clear to say that continuing on in James is the consensus. Thus, this week we will work on James 2:1-13. It is a longer passage than was done in the Intro course, but seems to pretty clearly stand as a single unit.

Regarding Simon Smailus' thoughts on application beyond the arc, this in large part can be woven into our work on James. That is, I encourage you to go beyond just completing the arc by do cross-referencing, check commentaries, write meditations of application, and/or create a sermon outline. A big plus to Published Pages is that you can now include different components of this sort together all in a single published page.

I look forward to seeing the fruit of everyone's study!
Nohea
Do we work on the ark on home screen or make a new project? How do we get it here for others to see?
Andy Hubert
You will want to create a new project for your arcs. When you are done, you can then click the share icon next to the project name and passage in order to create a new published page. Once you have published your page, you will see a check box for your groups and in that way you can share your page with this group.
Nohea
James.. And a ?question?
I would like to continue in James.

Question: how do you add verses to your arc once you have started? Is this possible? I realized that a couple verses previous are important for my arc of John 4

Hi, this worked for me. Tap the passage displayed above the Main Point Summary box, options will appear to add verses either above or below the current passage. You can then add a single verse at a time.
Andy Hubert
One additional note is to make sure you are in Editing mode to be able to do this.

Application and Group Idea
I second your thoughts, Simon. One big take-away from the class for me was that arcing is a awesome tool for meditation on the Scriptures, which leads to personal edification! So, I would love to learn more on how folks transform an arc'ed passage a Bible study or message to share with others; meditation to delivery. This group may not be the context for this, though. I agree w/ the rest that finishing James would be good. But, if a group or class is ever conceived around application, I'm very interested!

Application Discussion
I had hoped that rather than going through texts we might discuss using an arcing approach in different contexts. One that has already been mentioned is how arcing can be used for topics and themes.

It might also be valuable to discuss arcing and its use in a variety of contexts from preaching/teaching workflows to its use for church staff and approaches on making it accessible to the church in general.

Also, although I find arcing useful it would be interesting to find out what people do once they’ve completed the arc. How is this knowledge then used? Is it prayed over for a sermon? Do you supplement it with other research? Do you categorise your findings to build an index of Bible passages that deal with different subjects? Do you create your own commentary on the Bible with it? These are the kinds of questions I’m grappling with. For arcing to be truly useful it needs to fit into our spiritual lives and this could do with some discussion.

If this isn’t appropriate for this group, then maybe a group looking at this might be of merit?

another vote for James
I'm in for continuing in James as well.

Question... I can't figure out how to get to this group from biblearc.com.  I don't see "Groups" anywhere in my menu or anywhere else.  The only way I have been able to get back is to click on a link in one of the emails.  Am I missing something?
Josué Pineda
Go to Menu > Published and shared, and at the bottom you will see the groups that you are part of.

How will this work?
Did I miss an email? How will we be engaging with this class? Will we have class time, etc.? Will we be participating in assignments?
Andy Hubert
This is not a class, but a group. The difference being that this will not be anything with official assignments and feedback. The big idea is mutual participation and commenting on each others' work. Check out my previous message below regarding passage/topic.

James
The fear of God is fine.  But having the teacher already gone through James would add benefit.  Also, since this is my first go at arcing, I think whole books better suits the best way to learn holistically.

Great Idea
Great Idea Andy!!! I would prefer as well to keep going with James but definitely to look as well afterwards to something topical as well. It will be challenging but definitely will be something very helpful. The fear of God or the Holiness of God could be a good start.

James
I would love to continue through James. But some sort of study on the fear of God definitely interests me also. Ryan Williams, I'm not sure if you've read the Puritan paperback "the great gain of godliness" but it's an incredible book on the fear of God. Its on Malachi 3:16-17.
Chadwick Haygood
Yes!
Andy, thank you for doing this. I am certain that it will be tremendously helpful to me. I really appreciate it! I'm sincerely up for whatever but since the momentum is leaning toward James, I'll follow the crowd.

Let's do James
I'd like to continue in James. Since Andy Hubert has already done the work and has video explaining it, we would benefit from his continued instruction via videos. It also would be less of a burden for him than doing something new. A topical study doesn't seem to lend itself to doing arcs, in my opinion.

Direction
It is time to open up a discussion regarding how we would like this group to work. The group will work the best, the more people that are excited about the passages we are arcing so as to maximize participation. Here are two suggestions to start us off.

 - We could continue through chapters 2-5 of James. We would arc a paragraph each week. At the end of the week I could share what I've come up with. (I have already arced the rest of James, and so I know that I would have a contribution to add at the end of each week. I also have gone through these chapters in the Learning Resources add-on videos for those who would want to also hear me talk through building the arcs.)

 - Ryan Williams suggested we choose passages on the topic of the fear of God.

Please click on the link below to go to the group and add a message sharing what excites you, whether it be one of these options or another.

Small Group Studies
Hey All! Thanks for the invite. I'd like to propose a question: I was interested in doing some sort of small group study involving the fear of God. I'd like it to be just us, the group, going through the Bible together instead of doing a video or book series on the subject. Maybe we'd look at either a specific book, or a storyline in the Bible, or maybe we'd focus on a series of verses that relate to the topic.

What is the best way to use BibleArc to aid me in my quest? I'd like to practice using BibleArcas as a tool to help prepare and organize my small group sessions. Thanks!
Chris Lohroff
I'll be curious to see a formal response from our leaders on this question as I think of Arcing as a tool for expositional study rather than topical study.  This particular topic (The Fear of The Lord) is one I've spent a LOT of time on over the past few years and if it isn't something we can work on via this group I'd love to interact with your in another forum.  Let's see how this pans out first then we can connect later if that works better.
Eddy Barnes
While I don't think that Biblearc directly handles topics per se, it wouldn't be hard to take a survey of texts that handle the phrase "fear of God" or the like and exegete those texts with the tool.

I will say that it might be simpler just to pick a contiguous text to slowly work through, though the above approach might also be fruitful.
Andy Hubert
I agree with Eddy. The way you study a topic with arcing is you arc a bunch of passages on that topic.

As for this group, I am happy to go this direction or another. I will try to encourage a conversation on this in the coming days and we will see where interest is. If we do not do this topic, then there is of course the option to create a new group based upon that topic.

Group direction
At the end of the week, after I give people a chance to join the group, I will start laying out some direction for how this group might function.

If you have interest in helping to give direction to this group, let me know and I will make you an admin.
